The Argentina national team has finally released their final squad for the 2024 Copa America. Coach Lionel Scaloni has cut three names from the provisional squad that had joined the training camp in the United States.

Ahead of their participation in the 2024 Copa America, Argentina played two friendly matches. The two teams faced by Lionel Messi and co. were Ecuador and Guatemala.

In the match against Ecuador on Monday morning (June 10, 2024), Argentina secured a 1-0 victory. Argentina’s only goal was scored by Angel Di Maria.

Meanwhile, Argentina initially trailed against Guatemala on Saturday morning (June 15, 2024). However, Argentina came back by scoring four goals, including one from Messi.

After these two friendly matches, Scaloni made the decision to cut three names from the provisional squad of 29 players.

The three names cut by Scaloni were Marseille defender Leonardo Balerdi, Brighton defender Valentin Barco, and Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa.

The exclusion of Correa was quite surprising as Scaloni opted to bring Monza forward Valentin Carboni, who is only 19 years old.

The Argentina national team has announced their squad list for the 2024 Copa America.

This year’s Copa America will take place from June 20 to July 14, 2024, with the United States hosting the tournament.

According to the group draw, the defending champions Argentina are in Group A along with Peru, Chile, and Canada.

Argentina will also play the opening match of the 2024 Copa America against Canada.

The clash between the two teams will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, on Friday (June 21, 2024) at 07:00 WIB.

Five days before the tournament starts, Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni announced his official squad.

The deadline for submitting the squad to CONMEBOL was the night of June 15 local time.

This means Scaloni waited until the last day to make his squad selection decisions.

In his decision, he made some significant changes.

Angel Correa, Valentin Barco, and Leonardo Balerdi were the three names cut from the final squad list.

The three players were initially included in Argentina’s provisional squad of 29 players.

However, the maximum number of players allowed for the official Copa America squad is 26, so they had to be cut before the tournament.

Correa has made 25 appearances for the national team and scored three goals during that time.

However, the 29-year-old striker has disappointed at his current club, Atletico Madrid, where he has scored only 64 goals in 304 appearances.

Brighton and Hove Albion’s 19-year-old defender Barco was replaced after making just one appearance with the senior Argentina squad.

The last name cut from the squad was Marseille’s Balerdi, another young defender who has only two caps for Argentina.

Superstar Lionel Messi will captain the team, two years after leading them to glory in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Other key players in the Argentina squad include Julian Alvarez from Manchester City and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea is included in the team after undergoing hernia surgery last April, which sidelined him for the last months of the season.

After not featuring in either of the two pre-tournament friendlies, young winger Alejandro Garnacho is another surprise inclusion.

Garnacho will join his Manchester United teammate Lisandro Martinez, a defender who missed most of the 2023/2024 Premier League season due to injury.
