Smarter Vehicles Could Revolutionize Traffic Light Systems with White Lights Joining the Mix

Henry Liu, a civil engineering professor at the University of Michigan, believes that a new traffic signal system powered by AI could be closer than we think. Ali Hajbabaie, an associate engineering professor at North Carolina State University, proposes the addition of a fourth light, potentially white, to indicate when autonomous vehicles are present and can take control of traffic flow.

While Hajbabaie’s research is still in the early stages and would require a significant percentage of self-driving vehicles on the road to be effective, it represents a unique approach to modernizing traffic signals. On the other hand, Waymo, a leading self-driving car company, has demonstrated the feasibility of autonomous driving without the need for additional traffic lights.

University of Michigan researchers have taken a different approach by using data from General Motors vehicles to adjust the timing of traffic lights in real time. This innovative solution leverages existing vehicle data to optimize traffic flow, eliminating the need for costly infrastructure upgrades.
