Onvo L60 SUV Priced at £24k Undercuts Tesla Model Y in China by Nio

Nio, the renowned electric vehicle manufacturer, is set to launch its new family-focused EV brand Onvo with the introduction of the L60 – a crossover that is poised to rival the popular Tesla Model Y. This new model is designed with a strong emphasis on practicality and efficiency, making it an attractive option for families looking for a versatile and eco-friendly vehicle.

The L60 is scheduled to go on sale in China starting from September, with a starting price of approximately £24,000. This competitive pricing significantly undercuts its main competitor, the Tesla Model Y, making it an appealing choice for budget-conscious consumers. While there are no official plans yet to bring the Onvo brand to the UK, it is speculated that if the L60 were to make its way to British shores, it would likely be priced around £40,000 to maintain a comparable cost gap.

Onvo, formerly known as Alps, is the first of two new EV brands being introduced by Nio, with the second brand, codenamed Firefly, expected to target the European market with a more affordable compact EV. The L60 serves as a representation of Onvo’s focus on catering to family buyers in the lower premium segment, with a strong emphasis on interior space, safety, and utility.

One of the standout features of the L60 is its advanced 900V electrical architecture, which enables ultra-rapid charging capabilities. The vehicle will offer consumers a choice of three BYD-supplied battery packs, providing an impressive range of 344, 454, or 620 miles, based on China’s CLTC test cycle. In terms of efficiency, Nio claims that the L60 outperforms the Model Y with a consumption rating of 5.1mpkWh, thanks in part to its sleek design which boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.229Cd – making it the most aerodynamically efficient SUV on the market.

While specific dimensions of the L60 have not been disclosed, Nio highlights that the vehicle’s design, including short overhangs, maximizes interior space and offers innovative storage solutions to accommodate passengers’ luggage. In terms of technology, the L60 is equipped with advanced driver assistance features similar to those found in Nio’s existing EV lineup.

Moreover, the L60 is compatible with Nio’s proprietary battery-swap stations, allowing for a quick battery change in just three minutes at over 1000 locations across China. Additionally, the vehicle can be conventionally charged at Nio’s extensive network of public chargers, totaling 25,000 stations.

Overall, the Nio L60 showcases the brand’s commitment to delivering innovative and practical electric vehicles that cater to the needs of modern families. With its competitive pricing, impressive range, and advanced technology features, the L60 is positioned to make a significant impact in the EV market, setting a new standard for family-focused electric crossovers.
