Mykhailo Mudryk to compete in Euros despite home city being under missile attack

Ukraine midfielder Mykhailo Mudryk is determined to represent his country at Euro 2024, despite the ongoing conflict in his home city of Krasnograd. Mudryk shared his family’s struggle with Russian missiles targeting their city “day and night,” highlighting the harsh reality faced by many Ukrainians since President Vladimir Putin’s invasion in February 2022.

In a powerful video produced by the nation’s football association, Mudryk and 12 other players opened up about how the war has affected their hometowns. Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, Bournemouth’s Ilya Zabarnyi, and Dynamo Kyiv’s Mykola Shaparenko all provided insight into the destruction caused by the conflict, with Shaparenko revealing the devastation of his childhood village by Russian forces.

Despite the turmoil back home, Ukraine’s football team is gearing up to face Romania in their Euro 2024 opener in Germany. Chelsea’s Mudryk expressed his determination to play, emphasizing the resilience and hope of his parents who remain in Krasnograd.

The city, known as the birthplace of Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, has been a battleground in the conflict, with Ukrainian troops reclaiming parts of the region through a counter-offensive. However, the situation remains dire, as the Russian military launched a renewed offensive in the Kharkiv region in May.

Andriy Shevchenko, president of Ukraine’s football association, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Ukrainian cities are not just fighting for the right to host sporting events like Euros, but for their freedom. The UAF called on all Euro 2024 countries to support Ukraine in its struggle, recognizing that sports, including football, are not immune to political realities.

As Mudryk and his teammates prepare to take the field amidst this challenging backdrop, their commitment to representing their country serves as a poignant reminder of the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people in the face of adversity. The support and solidarity from the international community will be crucial in helping Ukraine rebuild and recover from the ongoing conflict.
