In the US, Chinese national YunHe Wang was arrested and accused of using a botnet to hack into millions of devices across almost 200 countries. He allegedly sold access to these infected computers to other cybercriminals, allowing them to commit various offenses including fraud, child exploitation, and bomb threats. The Department of Justice estimated that more than 500,000 fraudulent unemployment insurance claims were sent from devices under Wang’s control, resulting in a loss of over $5.9 billion.

Mr. Wang used the proceeds from his cybercrimes to acquire luxury assets, such as a Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, BMWs, and expensive watches. Law enforcement agencies in Singapore and Thailand, as well as technology giant Microsoft, collaborated in the investigation. If convicted on all counts, Mr. Wang faces a maximum penalty of 65 years in prison.

In Europe, Europol has made arrests in Armenia and Ukraine and taken down servers across the world, including in the UK, the US, and Germany. More than 2,000 websites are now under the control of European law enforcement. One of the main suspects in Europe made over €69 million in cryptocurrency through ransomware attacks.
