Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Ditches Four-Cylinder PHEV for 585bhp V8

Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 to Receive V8 Power

The highly anticipated Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 is set to receive a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, offering up to 585bhp. This decision comes as a reversal of the initial plan to equip the new coupé and cabriolet with a 670bhp plug-in hybrid drivetrain, as seen in the latest C63 and GLC 63 models. The shift in strategy is attributed to slow sales of the saloon, estate, and SUV models featuring the E-Performance PHEV drivetrain, combining a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a rear-axle mounted electric motor.

While the E-Performance technology showcases impressive performance capabilities, traditional AMG buyers have not fully embraced it, leading to lower sales figures compared to V8-powered models. As a result, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE range will feature the latest version of AMG’s M177 V8 engine with mild-hybrid technology for the most potent variants.

Positioned above the CLE 53 Coupé and Cabriolet, which are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine producing 442bhp, the new V8-equipped CLE models aim to establish a direct rivalry with the BMW M4. The decision to offer V8 power also takes into account feedback from Mercedes’ global dealer network, which cautioned against potential customer confusion with a higher-spec four-cylinder offering above the six-cylinder variant.

Markus Schäfer, head of Mercedes-Benz’s R&D operations, noted that customer feedback would guide the future of AMG’s powertrain offerings. While the downsized petrol-electric drivetrain has its merits, the company remains committed to launching V8-powered AMG models, such as the new SL, GT, and S63. Schäfer emphasized the performance advantages of the hybrid technology inspired by Formula 1, blending high-performance combustion engines with strong electrical components.

The Mercedes-Benz team continues to evolve its lineup based on customer preferences, with a focus on delivering exceptional performance and driving experiences across its range of models. The decision to equip the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 with a V8 powertrain reaffirms the brand’s commitment to providing cutting-edge performance vehicles that cater to the desires of discerning drivers worldwide.
