Durham University Scientists Unveil Spectacular Images from Euclid Space Mission

A groundbreaking space mission involving Durham University scientists has recently unveiled five new and breathtaking images that are set to revolutionize our understanding of the dark Universe. The university is a crucial partner in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Euclid space telescope project, which was launched in July 2023.

Professor Richard Massey, from Durham’s Centre for Extragalactic Astronomy, expressed his excitement about the Euclid mission, stating that it boasts the most sensitive camera ever built. The newly released images showcase clusters containing thousands of galaxies, star-forming nurseries, and galaxy mergers, providing researchers with unprecedented insight into the cosmic phenomena.

Physicists at Durham played a key role in developing mock data used to train the analysis software of the Euclid telescope. Professor Massey emphasized the monumental effort behind designing Euclid, which took 20 years to create a durable spacecraft capable of surviving in space for at least six years.
