Anthropic, backed by Amazon, rolls out their Claude AI chatbot in Europe

Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup backed by Amazon, is making waves in Europe with the launch of its generative AI assistant Claude. This innovative assistant will be available to individuals and businesses through the web and an iPhone app.

The paid subscription-based version, Claude Pro, offers access to all models, including Claude 3 Opus, the most advanced offering by Anthropic. Additionally, the company is introducing Claude Team subscription-based plans for businesses, priced at 28 euros ($30) a month.

Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, emphasized the commitment to accuracy, security, and privacy in the design of Claude. As AI continues to advance rapidly, there are concerns surrounding its impact on jobs and privacy.

The European Union Parliament recently passed the AI Act, the world’s first major regulatory framework for governing AI technology. This legislation categorizes AI risks into levels of low, medium, high, and unacceptable, setting the groundwork for responsible AI development and deployment.

Claude.ai is fluent in multiple European languages, catering to a diverse user base across the continent. While already available in the U.K., this launch marks the first time European and non-EU users in countries like Norway, Switzerland, and Iceland can access the product.

Anthropic has garnered significant attention in the AI space, with investors valuing the company at $18.4 billion in recent months. Amazon’s $2.75 billion investment further solidifies its position in the market. However, regulatory concerns have been raised over Amazon’s involvement, with regulators in the U.K. examining the implications of the investment on competition.

Microsoft’s partnerships with AI firms have also come under scrutiny, prompting discussions around the boundaries between collaboration and potential mergers. Both Amazon and Microsoft have defended their positions, stating that the partnerships are focused on corporate investment and innovation rather than mergers.

In a rapidly evolving AI landscape, Anthropic’s Claude assistant represents a significant step forward in AI development and accessibility for users across Europe. With a focus on accuracy, security, and privacy, Anthropic is poised to make a lasting impact in the AI industry.
